Finance Minister Mario Marcel believes that Codelco can take over the National Lithium Policy "without weakening" , since it is a company with "competent" professionals and "solid governance".

In conversation with La Segunda , the Secretary of State stated that "the first thing to understand is that Chilean legislation, since 1977, reserves the extraction of lithium for the State and defines it as a non-concessible mineral, contrary to what It happens with copper, for example. In these circumstances, the framework for private sector participation is more restricted. Until now, this has taken the form of contracts with Corfo in the Salar de Atacama."

"The policy opens a new form of private participation, which is that of joint ventures with a public company, immediately Codelco. In his speech, the President said that the majority participation of the State would be applied to the most relevant projects, and the strategy contemplates other modalities for the rest of the cases," he explained
