    SALINAS

Between the second half of January and October of last year, the population of Salinas (41,690 inhabitants) faced the drought, which, once again, led to the declaration of a state of emergency in the municipality. According to the Civil Defense of Salinas, the drought affected 8,464 people with lack of water, destruction of crops and loss of animals. A total of 1,450 residents – from 67 rural communities – had to be assisted by two municipal water trucks.

Today, Salinas is in an emergency situation because of the damage caused by the heavy rains that started in November. The strongest storm occurred between the night of November 15 and the following morning. At the time, according to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), 142.2 millimeters were recorded in a 12 and a half hour interval. The rain caused a lot of damage, with the flooding of houses and streets in several neighborhoods. The flood tore up the paving of the streets, damaged the asphalt and Copasa's water and sewage networks. Residents lost mattresses, stoves, refrigerators and appliances. Seven families were displaced.

The high rainfall densities in Salinas continued in November and December and in the first days of this month, reaching more than 700 houses and streets in the city. In addition, because of the rains, many side roads were impassable, leaving rural communities isolated.

The municipal coordinator of Civil Defense of Salinas, Richarley Viana, assesses that facing the consequences of the drought and the damage caused by the rains sacrifices the city hall. “Facing two disasters at the same time is an extremely complicated task that requires greater commitment and immediate action from those responsible for response activities”, comments Viana.

Salinas still suffers from the “sequelae” of the excessive rainfall at the end of 2021, when, on December 27, after the storms, the Salinas River overflowed and flooded the commercial center and several neighborhoods of the city, causing serious damage to trade and leaving around 2,700 people displaced and homeless in the municipality, where a state of public calamity was declared
