Perhaps it is not a change of sentiment in it's truest sense. Perhaps it is more of a 'return to senses'? After all, the overwhelming majority of the register had the same sense as you - that nothing substantive had changed (for better or worse). Perhaps some of the bed wetters are starting to agree? All IMO.
