A very sensible question....ok, in laymans terms...yes it's possible if the reservoirs are not joint, no it's not impossible to overcome, directional drilling etc etc
They are looking at the hydrocarbons and comparing to the petro models to understand where it's coming from, where best flow rates would be, if they've hit a little "pocket" that's isolated etc. hydrocarbons vary, google C1 -C12, alternatively I'm ok to explain it via email or phone if you like
