It’s not “their time”. It’s company time since they are employed and getting paid by the company, in return for their time (which includes making use of whatever skills and expertise they have to get the job done).

Therefore my time is not my time when I’m at work. It’s company time, I’ve agreed to exchange my time for a some of money. And at the end of the day I’m not doing the company any favours by showing up, I’m contractually bound to show up and spend the agreed upon amount of time (usually more) to satisfy my end of the contract.

For that reason companies don’t owe their workers any favours. I’ve seen people been made redundant after 35+ years of service, without any real justification.
