This is a big deal health wise and economy wise, like it or not, even those saying it was no worse than the flu a few days back are probably now reconsidering that position, though you can't convince some people of anything despite the facts.

Totally agree on the live animal markets in China. We must remember that animals (wild and domestic) are kept in similar conditions all throughout the devloping world so its not just a Chinese problem.

And we all saw the appalling footage a few months back of how Australia was sending its ex race horses to the knackeries where they too were being appallingly treated. So one must wonder if some regular abattoirs are much better here?

Even if you are not a lifelong animal lover (and eater of some of the tastier ones) one fact was pointed out to me by a family member who is a very wise Veterinarian.

The fact that things, in this case animals diseases mutate and diseases jump species when animals are under enormous stress.

So a big part of the reason not to keep animals in appalling and cramped conditions is the fact that while we do new diseases will form, they will mutate and they will jump species. This is just a simple biological fact. Stress increases disease, its mutation levels, and its species jumping.

The world should come out of this crisis with a focus on vastly improving conditions for kept or caged animals if only for the sake of the humans who share their suffering in the form of the new diseases it creates.
