Short sellers certainly have their raison d'être, as the Wirecard case proves.
Here is an interesting interview by the Süddeutsche Zeitung with Fahmi Quadir, founder of the New York hedge fund Safkhet Capital (please use your translator):

    IMO Pro Shortselling:
Good hedge funds also do research, but they don't look for the opportunities of a company and are more interested in its dark sides and often uncover illegal, criminal machinations.
I don't think anyone here seriously wants to deny that there are and always have been various negative examples of this in the financial world (e.g. Credit Suisse).
So in some respects, reputable short sellers are a necessary component and antithesis of the financial world.

    IMO Contra Shortselling:
It is becoming increasingly easy to manipulate and unsettle through deliberate and targeted misinformation, collusion, corruption, etc. in order to capitalise on this.
These are criminal activities and should be better regulated and punished much more severely!
The usual fines are no longer a sufficient deterrent, because what are a few billion in fines for a company like Goldman Sachs?
Stricter laws should apply to repeat offenders, with more drastic penalties up to and including prison sentences, because tax fraudsters, for example, are also (rightly) imprisoned...

For "normal" investors like the most of us, there is the need not only to find a good company (which LTR undeniably is), but also to identify the cons.
So it is an extended research and therefore also offers extended opportunities.
Those who cannot stand this should invest their money elsewhere...
