In addition to what @dynofish just stated I see that there is a huge problem for a counter offer from another interested party. That is, with the number of shares that have been shorted and with such a tight register any offer that is significant enough for shareholders to consider would inevitably mean that shorters would have to close their position. We saw what happened at the first announcement on the 28 March. This would invariably happen again. For a new bidder this becomes a very tricky game to play - ie I want the business for $X but if I lob a bid in, then the price might rise to $X+ or $X++.
