are you sure they can close with a cash settlement? What would be the settlement price ? Surely it would be above the current share price upon settlement otherwise why would brokers who lend out the shares do that? They would have to buy new shares on the market to return the shares to the owners? Unless the owners wanted out. When this happens, there is usually a spike as the shorter buys them on the market then gives it back to the broker who then sells them on behalf of the owner.
