Okay, the why, how and wherefore back story is quite involved, so with license, I'll just give my nutshell version.

There once was a racehorse that was sent to the beauty stable-saloon for a colour change do over.

The goal was to make a good racehorse look-a-like a dud racehorse - and pray for no rain or the dye would run faster than the race!

Long story short, the shoe-in (aka ring-in) won and the bookies could not pay the winners.

An investigation ensued and the lye (lol) came out in the wash.

Many peoples careers were ruined and some went to jail for a long time.

ALB (aka Fine Cotton), was never gonna win the race.
