Advancing Equine Health with Point-of-Care Biomarker Testing

TeleMedVET, based in Ascot, Western Australia, is excited to share a significant development in our equine research and diagnostic capabilities.In partnership with Lumos Diagnostics, we are developing a lateral flow assay to rapidly measure osteocalcin – part of an array of bone turnover biomarkers that may be linked to lameness and spontaneous fractures in racehorses. This initiative is part of our broader scientific program at our equine research & development centre, where we are exploring the relationship between serum biomarkers and radiomic nuclear medicine molecular imaging in Thoroughbreds.Our current ELISA-based osteocalcin testing has provided strong insight, but the next step is real-time, trackside testing. The new handheld system in development will:•Use whole blood •Quantitatively measure osteocalcin in 15 minutes •Display results via a mobile app •Enable optional cloud upload for streamlined data sharingThis innovation could bring us closer to risk stratification tools that may help prevent injuries before they occur - safeguarding the health and welfare of elite equine athletes.Huge thanks to the Lumos team for their collaboration and scientific rigour.
