I do agree, for sure. I would hope though, that since that article was written in 2011, that the labs that are handing out ISO ratings have stepped it up a notch and have improved the accuracy of the conditions down-well. I highly doubt if there was a known flaw in a testing process, that they would not look to close that gap.
I guess there is a process to follow though. And the product being tested down-hole does not exactly give the ability to accurately measure all findings. Under lab conditions the proppants can be swapped out/examined/accurate readings taken on all fronts (including fines not exceeding thresholds during testing) as @Michaeljob covered in his comprehensive post on testing.
It's like anything else though I would say, tested under a controlled environment prior to real world application.
I would say it is the same process all others went through as they were first entering the market. Time will tell.
