Naked short selling is not allowed in most countries. Which means the loaner has to have the share to loan. Big firms make lots of money loaning shares, over 20% PA They keep their un-loaned shares to a minimum, it dilutes earnings. So when a shorter shorts a share they buy one, sells to cover when they buy to cover. The total shares available on market does not change when you look at the entire market not just the share created by shorter. Very simple to understand 1 + (-1) = 0.
look at Shortman and stock chart and see what shorts have caused recently. Look at the time when Lynas fell dramatically Started about April 22 Shorts were 9.73% May 23 they were 8.25% during this time Sorters bought 12 M shares to cover. Stock dropped just over A$1.00. So you can analyze all you want but common sense says they have a stabilizing impact (buy buying to cover to take their profits).
Shorts are allowed on every major exchange. Why? They are a stabilizing influence on highs and lows. No shorter Shorts stock to make it go down and this is very important to remember. They short to make money because they believe stock is going down. This is a mirror image of why you buy.
You blame Shorter's for fall. I do not. Lynas is way overvalued. All well accepted metrics of stock values have Lynas from 3 X to 10 X higher than its pears averages on ASX. Revenue per share. EPS, CASH / share, Market Cap to book value.
Another Dramatic indicator of why Lynas should be lower is earnings, 2022 A$514M, 3 X 2025 half 0ne earnings A$18 M (note I multiplied by 3 not 2) a drop of 96% during that time stock dropped 11 to 7.80 = 30 % I am not saying the stock should follow the Earnings one to one. This gap does say stock has a lot further to drop. I have been wrong about this a lot in the last 8 years. I have never seen a case where stocks do not come in line with standard metrics over time. This is why every single stock summery page includes these Matrics at top. This is why almost every company puts the P&L as the first report, profits are the summery of that entire page.
Many posts on this page talk about things that will make REE prices go up, Why? Higher REE prices will raise profits. Yet when I post how bad profits are and how much they have fallen everybody says that is not important. I have asked many times how wanting higher REE prices and Profits are not important align. No one has answered yet. Are you willing to try? If wrong I would like to know why, and I will become a buyer.
