RE is used in DC motor/generators and Lithium is used in the battery. Totally separate applications.
There are many applications were RE is needed and Lithium is not needed, such as wind turbines and mains powered factory automation servo motors.
There is no replacement for RE in high-performance DC servos/motors/generators. The competitor for RE in motors in the AC induction motor/generator.
Geared Wind turbines use AC induction generators (more complicated, more components) and Gearless Wind turbine generators use DC permanent magnets (more elegant, less moving parts, less to repair).
Telsa Model S is Tesla's low volume model and uses AC induction motors. No permanent magnets needed.
The Tesla model 3 however, will be mass produced at high volumes. It uses DC permanent magnet motors.
There are pros and cons for AC Induction motor/generators (no RE) vs DC permanent magnet motor/generators (RE). Neither one will replace the other.
Lithium in batteries can be replaced but there is no replacement for RE is DC motors.
