Hitler's rise to power was strongly linked to the difficult conditions that prevailed in Germany after the First World War. The 1919 Peace of Versailles, which ended the war, imposed harsh conditions on Germany, including large war reparations and territorial losses. These conditions led to a deep economic crisis, hyperinflation and mass unemployment in the 1920s. The political instability of the Weimar Republic created a breeding ground for extremism.
