KUANTAN: A lawmaker today urged Lynas Corporation Ltd (Lynas) to keep its promise, made in 2012, to send the residue from its rare earth plant in Gebeng here back to Australia.

Kuantan Member of Parliament, Fuziah Salleh said since the plant was given the temporary operating licence (TOL) and allowed to operate in 2012, the company has yet to set up a site for permanent disposal facility (PDF) to dispose the radioactive residue.

“If possible, I hope the government can instruct them (Lynas) to send the waste back to Australia.

“Lynas had promised in 2012 to send the residue back (to Australia) and the government need to be stern about this....

"Also, they (Lynas) have to be responsible and adhere to the agreement,” she said after opening the state-level National Family Month celebrations, here, today.

Also present were National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) board of director Normah Mohd Dali and Pahang LPPKN chairman Nor Hafizah Md Nor.

Meanwhile, Fuziah, who is also Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, said the findings from the public hearing conducted by Lynas Advance Materials Plant (LAMP) executive review committee, has been handed over to Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin on Tuesday.

“I am not sure what is the result (conclusion) but the findings have been handed over to the minister on Tuesday.

“The minister (Yeo) should be issuing a statement maybe in a day or two.” she said.

It was reported that the committee, set up following a Cabinet meeting held on Oct 10, held a public hearing in Kuantan on Nov 11 to hear statements from all relevant parties including Lynas Malaysia Sdn Bhd, non-governmental organisations (NGO), government agencies and experts in environmental management.

The move to set up the committee was in line with the new government’s aim not to turn Malaysia into a dumping ground for tainted materials by foreign companies

Lynas never promised to send the waste back Australia. As a requirement of the TOL Lynas had to sign a letter of undertaking that if required the company would send the waste back to source if required during the TOL period only. It was an assurance in incase the company failed to comply with regulatory conditions during the TOL period and was shut down. Totally irellivant to its operations post TOL.

Regardless, Lynas has three options available for residue management.
