From SMM:
""Automakers Scramble for Rare Earth Alternatives Amid China's Export Restrictions 08:11PMSource: SMM
Since China's decision in April to restrict exports of rare earths, which it monopolizes, automakers have been seeking alternative sources of rare earth minerals for magnets. The tit-for-tat situation triggered by the tariff war has suffocated the automotive industry. China controls approximately 90% of the global supply of these strategic metals, which are critical for the high-speed operation of EVs. Without rare earth ores, manufacturers cannot produce the magnets needed to drive electric motors. Additionally, magnets are essential in windshield wipers, headlights, braking systems, steering wheels, and seat motors. Faced with this existential threat, automakers are desperately exploring alternatives. """"If magnet exports are restricted, they could directly install magnets on motors manufactured in China, bypassing all the complications. After all, there are well-known Chinese magnet producers to collaborate with."""" Another option is to stockpile mineral inventories.
AND, the kicker:
China has made offers to assist Malaysia with rare earth processing know how and tech, but for Malaysian state owned entities only. In my opinion this could be seen as a way to undercut Lynas' deals with Malaysia and further exert control over rare earths globally.
From SMM:
""China to Assist Malaysia in Rare Earth Processing Tech via State-Owned Enterprises08:29PMSource: SMM
Foreign media reported that Malaysia's Acting Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Johari Abdul Ghani, revealed China's intention to provide assistance to Malaysia in rare earth processing technology and techniques. He particularly emphasized that this cooperation would be exclusively between state-owned enterprises of the two countries. Johari added that although the current discussions are still in the preliminary stage and no specific agreements have been reached, given China's leading position in the global rare earth sector, especially its outstanding advantages in rare earth element separation technology, this assistance from China holds profound significance for Malaysia. He also noted that this move is expected to enhance Malaysia's international reputation in the rare earth industry, making it the only country in the world to master both Chinese-funded and non-Chinese-funded rare earth processing
