The reason Li-ion batteries have issues with fire is simple they have much higher energy density. So if they overheat with over charging or shorting, they can very easily explode or catch fire!
Unfortunately this danger is a prerequisite for any energy source needed for transport. Take petrol, diesel, lpg, or hydrogen for example all have high energy density and can burn or explode and often do! Yet we still use them!
Nmhi Batteries at the moment at least can't fill the need that Li-I batteries and other fuels can, They simply do not have the required energy density.
