It's imperative to read about the mentality that prevailed and the subsequent mentality that prevails now due to back then. Four books for you:

Dealing with China  An Insider Unmasks the New Economic Superpower  Henry M Paulson, Jr  Twelve

All four authors have extensive backgrounds. "Everything Under the Heavens" is particularly telling in its description of the current relationship of China towards Japan due to  the Nanjing Massacre where Japanese troops killed over 300,000 women and children in rather brutal ways. Hatred unfortunately still exists, particularly in China.
