I think with Lynas its an "okay" mix between instos and retail, but as the price increases it will no doubt attract the sharks. Retailers have just got to hold regardless of drop because that is what they wait for. The only way you can win an insto in this game is to pay for the stock with your own cash and not on credit like margin loan, accept the fact that if you purchased the share towards its peak that your share price might go down in the short term, dont average down IF you can not afford it forcing you to sell at a loss, just get the stock put it in a draw and have look every few months or so.

They commented about instos taking each other on when it came to Lynas as apparently it doesnt happen to often, they said the bigger players normally stay out of each others way and its practice that they go long and short on different stocks.
