The older Chinese will remember well their poverty etc, but that was when 80% of the population resided in the countryside, an agrarian economy. Now 80% are living in high rises with air conditioners and they are all 'enjoying' three square meals a day, the latest car models, even luxury goods and foreign holidays. Change in an empires fortunes has lessened. The Romans ruled for centuries and declined over centuries, the British ruled the waves etc for a couple of centuries and lost it all in less, the most recent true empire, the Americans ascended for ~50 years and have declined in the last 40-50. The Chinese empire will ascend & descend very quickly and for very obvious reasons.
