Lynas is an excellent company and very well run. It survived not because of the Japanese, who of course helped keep it afloat as it is in their interest to do so, but because of Amanda Lacaze. Old timers here would remember that the Japanese wouldn't even take calls from Lynas when it was apparent that the plant wasn't working and the company was near collapse. Amanda saved the day and deserves the utmost respect. Old timers would also remember how customers were apparently prepared to pay for sustainability etc. etc. This never eventuated. The Japanese pay a small premium in line with the chinese vat amount, nothing more. So, apart from a few contracts with floor and ceiling prices, we are largely subject to chinese prices. So, essentially, we were had. Everyone was keen to see Lynas come on line to dave them from the chinese but they're doing nothing much in terms of showing support by putting their money where their mouths were. I suppose holding inventory is one way of preventing Lynas product from going for less than cabbage prices but how long can we keep this up? Amanda does a fantastic job of pushing costs down, that's the only reason we can keep going against the chinese.
