The Lynas plant at Gebeng is now complete and ready to start processing.
An exhaustive approval process for the necessary operating licence has been carried out. The AELB (the relevant authority) very carefully considered all claims against the plant. The opposition arguments were put and found wanting. The AELB then went further and obtained a second opinion from independent experts at IAEA, ultimately reaching the conclusion that the Temporary Operating Licence should be approved in February.
The government meanwhile established a Parliamentary Select Committee as a further check on the approval process. In June, this Committee recommended “that the Temporary Operating Licence (TOL) be issued for the LAMP. In addition, the report notes that Lynas has complied with the standards and laws in Malaysia, which are in line with international standards.”
In spite of this long, drawn-out process, opposition continued to delay the issue of the TOL until September when additional conditions of approval were complied with.
This should have meant the LAMP could start operating but the opposition appealed to the courts, refusing to accept the AELB’s decision.
The SMSL has no new evidence to back its claims but continues pushing its already discredited arguments. This is frustrating to all concerned. When is enough enough?
Now, it seems.
His Highness, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, in a rare intervention into public affairs, stated that many negative issues raised by certain parties, especially regarding the Lynas Rare Earth processing plant in Gebeng, are baseless and purely rhetoric.
He said that those actions only hinder the progress of the state’s economic growth and summoned the people of Pahang to unite and together develop the state and improve the welfare of everyone.
This is a very serious condemnation of SMSL for continuing their opposition to the plant when their claims have been found to be “baseless and purely rhetoric”. SMSL and Fuziah Salleh have done this purely for political purposes. Unfortunately for them, they’ve gone on with it too long.
A comment such as this one from the Royal Family, so highly respected in Malaysia, is a death blow to SMSL and Fuziah Salleh. They will lose not only in court but in the upcoming election.
