From what I recall the expiring patents are relative to upgraded prismatic cell design that should vastly improve energy density of the current breed of NiMH batteries. The figures I saw mentioned up to 4x the density so I would suggest the next gen NiMH should be at least 2x as good for mobile applications than they are now.
