SO if I put ten gold coins out in a field and bury the coins fifty feet down, you're saying that if you can't find them before the cost of finding the coins exceeds the value of the coins, the property with the coins has no value.

Where I come from the gold coins are still worth whatever the current gold price is, you just lost money searching for the coins. But the coins still retain their value whether you find them or not. Searching costs are separate from the coin value.

I recall the oil companies buying huge land leases, sight unseen, in Texas because of the oil below. The oil is worth what oil is worth; it's the production process that makes it uneconomical to drill but the oil always retains its value related to other oil.
