In order to build itself
as a world tourism and
leisure center Macau is
striving to push for a
green economy by improving
its energy efficiency, with an
objective of cutting the energy
consumed for each MOP
100m of GDP growth from 12
terajoules currently to about
8.5 terajoules in 2020.
In a seminar held at the Macau
Science Museum last Friday
environmental experts
from Macau, Hong Kong and
the mainland were present to
share their green innovations
with local entrepreneurs, hoping
to help them create better
economic returns with
less power consumption.
At the event organized by
the Macau Properties and Facilities
Management Association,
president of the Association
Ma Chi Ngai illustrated
the importance of a green
economy by talking about the
recent air conditions in the
mainland including Beijing.
“Macau needs blue sky for its
orientation as a tourism hub,
and this needs not only the
planning by government but
also requires action by enterprises
and the citizens.”
In her keynote speech
during the seminar, Deputy
Director of Environmental
Protection Bureau (DSPA),
Vong Man Hung, said Macau
subscribed to the Kyoto Protocol
on 14th January 2008.
As a participant of the inter-
Macau aims to improve energy
efficiency by 30pct in 8 years
national initiative in emission
reduction, the city has
been striving to achieve sustainable
growth by balancing
economic growth with environmental
protection, which
has shown initial results in
recent years.
“Despite a significant rise
in GDP and number of visitors
in the recent years, the
greenhouse gas emission
growth is staying at much
lower level,” the official said,
“Macau’s greenhouse gases
was mainly emitted by
power plants and vehicles
in the past; while emission
by power plants dropped by
33.9 percent in 2009/2010,
those by vehicles rose 7.9
percent in the same period,
showing the importance of
emission control on cars.”
She mentioned the government’s
plans to encourage
more environmental public
and private vehicles to help
the transportation sector
operate in a cleaner manner.
For the business sector as a
whole, she said energy efficiency
is one of the main concerns
in addition to water-saving.
According to the official,
Macau consumed 17.0 TJs in
2009 for every MOP100m of
GDP production, in 2012 it’s
been greatly improved to 12.0
TJs, and the government aims
to bring it further down to
12.0 TJs in 2015, and then 8.5
TJs in 2020.
For temperature changes,
the Meteorological and
Geophysical Bureau’s statistics
showed between 1961-
1990, the city’s average temperature
was 22.3 degree
Celsius, and it rose to 22.6
degree Celsius in 1981 – 2010.
During the seminar, a representative
from the Hong
Kong Quality Assurance Agency
presented their ISO50001
Energy Management System
that helps business operators
use power in a more efficient
way. AirStar Air Conditioning
Technology Group (HK) also
presented their REC system
in energy-saving air-conditioning
for offices.
