Macquarie cuts thermal coal price forecast by 6 to 8pct

Reuters reported that Macquarie Capital (Europe) said in a research note said “We have revised our seaborne thermal coal prices lower for the remainder of 2012, with the oversupply plaguing markets at present likely to be resolved by production cuts and somewhat better seasonal demand coming into Q4 2012.”

Macquarie said “We think it is too early to call a bottom in prices given the overstocked situation in China in particular, with the stalling of power generation in April the surprise which has caused us to change our forecasts.”

Macquarie is forecasting average physical Newcastle prices for 2012 at USD 102.30 a tonne FOB, down 6% from its previous forecast.

It is forecasting average South African prices of USD 96.80 a tonne FOB Richards Bay, down 7.6% from its previous figure.
