Hydrogen is the future. eV cars are a transitionary technology.. A lot of the larger companies like BMW and Mercedes tried to skip the eV entirely early in their strategies but the Hydrogen fuel cell was not refined enough and needed another decade of research. New technologies like pin-holing the catalyst sheet to reduce the high cost catalyst and reduce substantially the price of the fuel cell are examples of that refinement. Also hydrogen storage technology needed more development.
However, I believe the business case for larger power train equipment like ships, trucks, buses etc the business case already stacks up well against electric vehicles and the great thing is the right hydrogen cell will last a long time, have nowhere near the lifecycle costs of a battery (including proper disposal/recycling)..
