From what I am told, it is very difficult to know exactly how many shorts there out at any point in time. Official short numbers from the likes of Shortman are not a true indication apparently. Search for poster Seagull and go through some of his posts to get a sense of what goes on. Open & closed positions are constantly changing between multiple trading accounts which messes up 'official' counts. What is open or closed is constantly being manipulated to muddy the water. A bit like having shell companies hidden behind shell companies, the ultimate purpose is to hide from plain view. Lift a rock and the grubs scurry for cover!
