So there is no confusion, the difference between lignite and leonardite is leonardite has been oxidised and is associated with near surface deposits. Compared to Lignite it has about 30-35% of oxygen whereas Lignite has about 25-30%. Leonardite was named for Dr. A.G. Leonard, North Dakota's first state geologist, who was a pioneer in the study of lignite deposits.
Other than that the two coals are exactly the same and are both referred to as brown coal due to their high water contents for which the Exergen tech was specifically designed.
