The article says that she had two viruses - "Blood tests showed respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and adenovirus, common in children."

These in turn resulted in cardiomyopathy and myocarditis.

There is no mention of a bacterial cause to her death, however as the hospital had intubated her she would have been given antibiotics as a preventative measure against iatrogenic bacterial infection.

The mother is satisfied that the hospital did all they could.

The child only had sniffles on Sunday and was gone by Tuesday. How fast is that?

Cardiomyopathy causes significant damage to the heart and
little Maddy's heart was also hit by myocarditis. There was nothing else that the doctors could do other than support her body as best they could at the time. They did their best under tragic and difficult circumstances.

Fiona Cootes who was a young survivor of cardiomyopathy and one of Victor Chang's first heart transplant successes around the age of fourteen. She has since required a second transplant following the failure of the first. She was more fortunate than Maddy in that she was older, stronger and only affected by the cardiomyopathy.

Maddy was a much loved and special daughter who, although her life was short, had had the very best that life can offer. Perhaps she had already completed whatever it was that she had to do on this earth. Remember, "only the good die young". May she rest in peace and may her parents find find the strength to cope with their terrible loss.

Take a look back over your own ancestry and see for yourself how past generations had to cope with the inevitable loss of one or more of their children.
