I haven't seen any of the ads yet, but I think you've jumped the gun a bit looking for new industries given that the expenditure runs for a decade from this financial year.
I don't think the initiative is as much about creating new industries as strengthening what's already in place and bolstering our industrial base. There's a couple of billion for new innovation that's earmarked for new industries but you'll get some spillover from the rest of the package as well. But mostly I think it's about strengthening critical industry and shoring up skill supply for that purpose.
Borrowing from a speech by the Prime Minister in August:
"Making more things here in Australia.
Making our nation a renewable energy superpower.
Making our economy more resilient and more secure.
Making it easier for companies to invest in new projects and create new jobs, particularly in regional Australia.
Making the most of our natural resources and making the most of our people's potential."
....sounds a lot like ringfencing against geopolitical instability and trade uncertainty to me.
For what it's worth, I like it. I'm sure there's a multitude of political advantages the Government are pushing with it, it's what governments do, but these days any investment by our Government (whoever it is) that looks to do something in the future and set us up for the future is a good thing, and this package does hit areas that even Joe Blow down the pub can understand and see the point of it. It's nice to see our Government having a bit of vision and acting on it, hopefully our next government will come up with its own future thinking initiatives. Listening to bandaid expenditure announcements day after day is tedious.
I haven't seen the ad, but the campaign cost a bit. Supporting Australia's advertising industry and free to air TV, out to 2035 or, at least, until February![]()
