I decided to test your "apples". I bought one at Coles and one at Aldi. They looked much the same. The Coles one was a lot sweeter than the Aldi. Aldi, in my opinion second grade, picked too soon.

Years ago I used to supply both Woolies and Coles with product. Coles always wanted quality and value and paid me a premium whereas Woolies haggled on price. Aldi weren't in the market then.

Talking to an avo grower, he has three grades. Coles get the top, Woolies and Aldi the next and the third, the rejects, go to the discount markets, often roadside stalls. With Avos it is often the variety that demands a premium. Quality, according to him, depends also on the maturity at harvest. He says that too many are harvested too soon.
