Years ago I used to supply both Woolies and Coles with product. Coles always wanted quality and value and paid me a premium whereas Woolies haggled on price. Aldi weren't in the market then. Talking to an avo grower, he has three grades. Coles get the top, Woolies and Aldi the next and the third, the rejects, go to the discount markets, often roadside stalls. With Avos it is often the variety that demands a premium. Quality, according to him, depends also on the maturity at harvest. He says that too many are harvested too soon.

Some apples are kept in storage for up to a year, it enables supply 365 days of the year. Unless you go to farmers markets or where you've got local supplies in season there's no such thing as 'freshly picked' anymore.
