I think his point was more that ODY's only asset is shares in Marion. So if Mae goes up the asset value of ODY is directly attached to it.
However, if Marion gets sold the proceeds are returned directly to the shareholders. Ody would go up in value but the directors of ODY can keep trading and don't have to return money directly to the shareholders.
