Shutdowns Lead to Temporary Change
Arrium Mining would like to inform the Whyalla community of a temporary change to its operations as a result of several shutdowns throughout this year.
After consultation with the EPA, Arrium recently sought and received approval from the Department of State Development to stockpile excess magnetite filter cake outside of its Outer Harbour Export Facility. The approval also enables the export of some parcels of filter cake through the Outer Harbour facility.
This will occur during and after planned Pellet Plant shutdowns in February and July this year.
Filter cake is normally used to produce pellets at Arrium’s Pellet Plant. The material will continue to be produced by the mining operations during the shutdowns and, due to there being no pellet production during these periods, will instead be available for export.
Arrium Mining is not expecting this change to impact on the Whyalla community due to the filter cake containing moisture, which generally prevents it becoming a source of dust both while being transported and stored in the stockpiles themselves.
The main potential for dust generation is through the presence of trucks and equipment around the stockpiles, so water carts will be utilised on a regular basis to help minimise this potential. Strict environmental controls will also be in place, including regular monitoring and cleaning in the area.
