someone has very kindly done the maths for me...
so here we go..
1/ a surface area of 1.4km x 6.5km
2/ depth of 80m
so 1400 x 6500 x 80 = 728,000,000
then comes the clever bit:
Pure magnetite has a specific gravity of 5.1, meaning that it is 5.1 times heavier than the same volume of water. In practical terms a cubic metre of water weighs 1 tonne (1000 kg or 2200 lbs) while a cubic metre of magnetite weighs 5.1 tonnes (5100 kg or 11,220 lbs).
so we get an indicative tonnage by multiplying 728,000,000 by 5.1
that gives us 3,712,800,000
or 3.7128 billion for an estimate tonnage at Mt Ida.....
