So if you have say 100,000 options then you need to have $10K next year to convert them. Just feels like an interest-free loan for a year or so, but time will come when you need to convert them in order to keep the same amount of shares. So if you know you won't be able to come up with another $10K next year to be able to convert for some reason or another, but you've got that money now, you might as well convert right now in order to get the UAL shares for free.

Now this is not such a big deal with such a small amount of oppies, but if you hold a large number of them this becomes a real issue as you will need big $$ in order to convert.

Of course you can always sell some in order make up for the funds required to convert. But why would anyone ever want to reduce their MNS holding right?!..
