Small country school in the early 1960s. No formed playground, only a paddock half full of gum trees. Boys being boys back then meant throwing rocks at everything that moved... Hmmmm, and everything that didn't move. Maggies up in the trees were a prime target. Kids would peg a rock up into a gum tree and run. Amazing how many times the maggies knew who threw the rock. Kids would always go back into class with blood dripping from their ears and everyone laughing at them for being too slow. Happy memories..... Also, no helmets back then when riding bikes.. Best defense back then was to try to outrun the maggies..... Never worked though..... Nowdays the same schoolyard is full of buildings with not a gum tree in sight and if someone happens to get a kiss from a maggie, people are looking for someone to sue. Simpler times back in the day.
