re: china gears up A close friend of mine called me today in regards to his business trip in Hong Kong. Through out our conversation he mentioned how strict it was due to increasing fears of another SARS outbreak.

As a joke, him and his mate (a co-worker) pretended to sneeze in a crowded shopping complex, within an instant he said, the crowd ran like a pack of animals and many pulling out masks and placing them over their mouth.

He said, "he had never seen anything like this before, and even though he had a laugh he admittedly felt a bit guilty about playing the joke". He asked me if AFT had hit 15c yet, I said no way, he said, "well they should be, theres some serious sh*t going on down here and they should be exploiting this market. I wish you we're here to see this for yourself".

I said to him they are working on it mate, we should hear something soon imagine.
At first I thought he was exaggerating a bit until doing some reading and noticed this article and many other articles like this.

China gears up for possible new SARS outbreak
    -----------------------------------------------------
    October 14, 2003

Beijing - China is preparing for a possible return of the SARS virus.

One northern city is checking travellers for fever and experts are warning that the disease is certain to re-emerge.

The virus will "definitely come back", the official Xinhua news agency yesterday quoted an official of the government's disease control centre as saying.

"But the scale of the epidemic depends on the control measures we take," the official, Zeng Guang, was quoted as saying on Sunday at a symposium in Beijing.

Anxiety has increased due to a recent cold snap in China's north and the approach of flu season.

The Ministry of Health reactivated its nationwide system of daily reports on cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome on September 19, and said yesterday that no new infections had been reported since then.

SARS first appeared in China's southern province of Guangdong in November. It killed 349 people before it subsided in June.

"Caught unprepared this spring, Chinese authorities have learnt to act quickly before the epidemic can take a hold," Xinhua said.

Authorities in Beijing, the northern province of Shanxi and the northern region of Inner Mongolia, had activated emergency response systems, it added. - Sapa-AP
