So what is the "major blow" to the NBN rollout?

"...The negotiations involve the Australian satellite company KaComm, which has several orbital slots that could be used by NBN Co...believed to, understood to, wants to, could be used by NBN Co, It is understood, are likely, If no agreement is reached, prospect of possibly having to????"

NBN Co chief executive Mike Quigley said earlier this month that plans were on track to have the orbital slots ready for the launch date.

Below are some old articles relating to the process and risks.

Coordination process has been underway since August 2010

"In order to secure those slots the notifying authority, which in Australia is the Australian Communications and Media Authority [ACMA], needs to (a) initialise the registration procedure with the ITU, and (b) resolve any major compatibility issues with operators of neighbouring satellites.

"So long as there are no regional objections and the ITU registration process is underway, an operator can proceed with its launch plans."

According to NBN Co, the ITU international frequency coordination process has been underway since August 2010, with Quigley noting the formalities are expected to be completed before the satellites are in orbit in 2015

Though objections to NBN Co's slot bid had not been received to date, Quigley recently indicated some objections could be made by rival satellite operators.

They could include those companies who have sought to sell NBN Co their own, existing orbital slots above Australia.

NBN Co has been pursuing approval of the slots since August 2010 but the process could take several years and, should there be significant issues, could extend beyond the planned 2015 launch date of NBN Co's satellites.
