I wouldn't take too much notice of the brokers. They have no clue. Based on the Federal Reserve Banks statement in the US overnight, quantitative easing is going to continue for who knows how long- and that should be good for the gold price and all gold stocks.
Yes SLR took a >$300m write down, but this is due to the Integra acquisition, which was paid using SLR scrip anyway when it was much, much, much higher than where SLR's share price is today. The write down has been reflected in SLR's market capitalisation for a long time now, which is only around $307m. After SLR acquired Integra- the market cap was over $1 billion!
The key is for SLR is that it is able to fund its operations using internally generated cash flow long enough for the price of gold to start moving higher again.
Theoretically, this should be a great time to acquire quality gold companies like SLR as they've all been smashed and the gold price is looking like it might start trending up again.
