I'm in agreement with your geophysicist friend. Those atmospheric events would have not caused the earthquake. However, earthquakes are known to cause atmospheric events. When many hundreds of square kilometers of crystalline rock cracks and moves the piezoelectric voltages and currents let loose are staggering. Definitely could cause plasma and other atmospheric events.
