Deadline missed for substantial start of mining at Wiluna uranium mine project:
Conservationists have welcomed Toro Energy's failure to substantially start mining at its controversial Wiluna uranium project before the State Government's deadline. The divisive operation had been in the pipeline for several years, and was environmentally approved by the Barnett Government on January 9, 2017, and ruled mining must start within five years.
Now the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation has confirmed it did not receive notification of substantial commencement for the project from Toro before the January 9, 2022 deadline. While the approval remains in existence, the project cannot start unless WA Environment Minister Reece Whitby approves a change to the original conditions set by the Barnett Government in 2017. Toro must apply to the Minister for this to happen, but the Kalgoorlie Miner understands no application was made before the deadline. (The West Australian Jan. 12, 2022)
