I was in Japan a month ago in the early part of the outbreak. They were one of the countries to be hit first. Bars, shopping centres and restaurants were open, public transport was crowded. They didn't do a lockdown. The one noticeable difference was that people wore masks. They might have limitations in preventing an infection getting in, but they do seem to stop your own infection getting out if you're a carrier. Asian countries generally have fared better than Europeans, and so many people there wear masks.
