Despite this widespread skepticism, BPL has gotten some big boosts lately. The Federal Communications Commission has changed its rules to "foster broadband deployment using the significantly untapped capabilities of the nation's power grid." Last month, Google Inc. and Goldman Sachs & Co. invested $100 million in Germantown, Md.-based Current Communications Group LLC, which sells BPL gear and partners with utility companies to offer Internet access over power lines.
