The biggest barrier to entry is that writing software is hard. When your in the business of selling and shipping widgets and a 3rd party can increase your delivery times by x percent there is immediate economic benifit to that. You could start your own IT department and try and emulate what they have done. But generally I suspect that you find your good at selling and shipping widgets and really crap at managing a team of software developers.

So you buy your inventory management, customer relations, delivery optimisations and focus on what your good at.
