* China's Ministry for Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said on Monday the quota for rare earth smelting and separation in the country had been set at 115,000 tonnes.
* The total, set jointly with China's Natural Resources Ministry, is up 15 percent from 100,000 tonnes in 2017.
* China is the world's top producer of rare earths, a group of 17 elements used in magnets and consumer electronics that have been threatened with U.S. import tariffs.
* The Natural Resources Ministry said in late July China's rare earth mining output quota had been set at 120,000 tonnes for 2018, up 14.3 pct from 105,000 tonnes in 2017
