Could be a smart liberal strategy to win back those voters that were peeved MT was axed and were ready to protest vote. 
I liked MT but my first realisation that he was getting a little cooked was at the Hearts & Mind conference about 16 months in Sydney, when, in a room full of fund managers and stock investors he decided to rave on about his great achievement in getting the gay marriage bill through. No mention of economic achievements or how they were making things better for business and investment.
