Our poor delusional hand chopper's religion didn't demand what he did, but I suppose debating that topic would be a bit theological - and likely unproductive. Cooking his hand in the microwave is a pretty clear indication of mental disturbance.

By the way, your postscript is a paraphrase of Bible teaching - both with regard to money, and care for people. You have chosen well.
